When families call us about a new house, one of the first things we sort out is whether they want a custom home or a new build from a set of plans. Both end with you standing in a new house on your own land, and we build both — see our services. But they start in different places, and it's worth knowing which one fits you before you go too far.
Building from plans
You already have drawings — from an architect, a plan book, a builder's catalog, or a house you fell in love with and bought the plans for. You know the layout and the look. What you need is a general contractor who'll build it accurately, on schedule, and be there at the end. That's new construction, and it's a great fit if:
- You've found a plan you genuinely love and don't want to change much.
- You'd rather spend on finishes than on design time.
- You want a faster path from "decided" to "dirt moving."
A custom home
A custom home starts with a conversation, not a drawing. We sit down and talk about how your family lives, walk your land, and shape the plan around both. The porch faces the sunset. The kitchen fits the way you cook. The mudroom is exactly where the kids come in. That's our custom home process, and it's the right choice if:
- You have a clear picture of how you want to live but haven't found a plan that matches it.
- Your lot has features — a view, a slope, big trees — worth designing around. Look through our recent work for a few examples.
- This is the house you plan to stay in for a long time.
What about cost?
A custom home usually costs more than a comparable plan-book house, because there's design work involved and the details tend to be more particular. But "usually" isn't "always" — a simple, well-planned custom home can land close to a complicated stock plan. The honest answer is that the biggest cost drivers are the same either way: size, site work, roof complexity and finish level. We walk through those with you at the consultation — request a free estimate to set one up.
The part that's the same
Whichever you choose, you get the same framing crew, the same licensed and insured company, and the same promise: start to finish, phone answered, walkthrough before the keys. Not sure which fits? Reach out — it's a five-minute conversation, and there's no wrong answer.
